Unleash the power of priorities

In a transformational situation, it's crucial to establish priorities with focused energy in order to create meaningful change. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day operations and lose sight of the big picture. Being busy can easily be misunderstood for making progress. That's why it's essential to define priorities that align with your organizational direction.

As I laid out in a recent blog on Forbes, some things to keep in mind when choosing your priorities:

• Limit number of priorities to five to avoid diluting focus.
• Ensure that priorities are clear, memorable, and measurable when achieved.
• It's key that priorities indicate a step change and are ambitious.
• They should align with key stakeholders and the long-term vision for the business.
• Communicate priorities consistently and intensively throughout the organization. It’s hard to over-communicate and very easy to under-communicate.
• Cascade top priorities to leaders at all levels.
• Break priorities down into manageable chunks, like quarterly deliverables.
• Link team and individual priorities to performance reviews, targets, and KPIs.
• Reflect priorities in budget, talent allocation, and capex.
• Communicate and celebrate progress on priorities regularly. By focusing on what that truly matters, you can create a roadmap for success and ensure that everyone is working towards the same goals. While macro environmental or market changes may require adapting priorities, don't let distractions derail progress. Stay focused on priorities to achieve transformational change.
