The art of choosing the right gears

The art of choosing the right gears

In a transformational situation it’s important to manage your own focus and productivity. In this context, I like the book ‘5 Gears, How to Be Present and Productive When There is Never Enough Time’ by Jeremie Kubicek

  • Speaker/Best Selling Author and Steve Cockram. They defined a practical framework for various levels of presence, enhancing awareness and enabling better focus and attention management. Using the metaphor of gears, they illustrate that each gear is effective in specific situations, yet many people tend to favor only a few, limiting their potential. Here's a brief overview of the five gears, from highest to lowest: 5th Gear: Focus Mode In this state, you experience heightened concentration and flow, almost oblivious to distractions. This is like the overdrive gear when you reach your highest level of productivity. It can deliver great results, but humans can’t operate endlessly at this level. There are certain jobs/tasks which lend themselves better to this gear. For example, long term planning and envisioning changes align well this gear. 4th Gear: Task Mode Our task-oriented world often defaults to this gear focusing on to-do lists and tasks to complete, However, getting stuck in this gear can become counter-productive. While tasks are crucial, an exclusive focus here neglects interpersonal interactions and the need for other gears. 3rd Gear: Social Mode This gear facilitates casual interactions, like coffee breaks or social outings, where conversations span beyond work. While not intensely work-focused, it's not entirely personal either. It strengthens relationships beyond transactions but doesn't reach deep friendships yet. This level allows the shift up to gear 4 or to gear 2 in a relationship. 2nd Gear: Connect Mode Switching to this gear involves genuine connections and quality time with family, friends, and close colleagues. It's about being present without a specific agenda, fostering relationships. You can’t stay in multi-task mode in this gear. It’s like putting the phone down and letting go of the need of always doing something. It’s giving yourself to another person completely for a period of time. 1st Gear: Recharge Mode This gear is all about recharging. When you are not recharged it’s almost impossible to be present with anybody and add value. It’s the gear that you need at the beginning and end of the day for example. These are things like reading, exercising, meditating, reading, and pursuing hobbies. Healthy rest restores you so you can continue to be your best you. Which of these gears do you gravitate to? If you had to rank them by your natural preference, how would you? How does your day and week look like in terms of gears? Could you be even more effective by more deliberate shifting to the right gears? ...meer
