Balancing leadership modes in times of change

In transformational business situations, the right balance of leadership modes that a person or team uses, can help break away from the status quo and shape the future. Finding that balance is often what separates momentum from stagnation.
It can be helpful to think in terms of four leadership mindsets and whether the right mix is applied at any given time: • Operational: driving flawless execution and continuously improving core processes. • Managerial: Ensuring that roles, routines, and decision-making structures are clear and aligned. • Inspirational: Creating vision, energy, purpose, and excitement across the team.
• Entrepreneurial: Exploring new ideas, deals, and business models that shape the future. Often, in my experience, leaders tend to have their 1-2 favorite modes, but also their not-so-natural modes. A transformational situation can require, however, a specific mix which might be different. That’s why it’s helpful to regularly ask yourself: • Which is my dominant mode right now?
• What does the current situation need from me to shift gears? It’s about knowing when to adjust as you go. The real challenge is balancing all four with intent and agility.
