Nudging from planning to execution
In a transformation, next to having a good strategy, it’s key to get things done. However, planning can feel more appealing than implementing. I found the “implementation nudges” from the article “Crossing the Chasm” in Business Horizons helpful:
#1 Remove the distraction to plan: When strategic planning and execution are discussed in a meeting, minds tend to focus on planning. To counter this, organize separate implementation meetings.
#2 Develop implementation intentions: Focus as a team on ‘if/then’ preemptive implementation solutions to issues that might occur.
#3 Use verbal framing: Using execution wording has positive effect on mental focus, e.g. “We get things done”.
#4 Highlight the end game: When individuals get things done, it can convey a sense of empowerment and growth when linked to a bigger mission.
#5 Leverage a crisis: This is about creating a sense of crisis and urgency which shifts a mind to execution.
#6 Celebrate small wins: Setting short term deadlines and milestones, and celebrating them.
Several I already use (e.g., endgame, verbal framing, celebrating wins), and one or two I find insightful and will use more (e.g., if/then preemptive solving).
